Washington has led since the database opened. It also has a lot of forest, a lot of black bears, and a lot of people walking into that forest.
In 2024 the data scientist Floe Foxon published a model in the Journal of Zoology covering every US state and Canadian province. Sightings tracked black bear numbers closely. Every extra 1,000 bears came with about 4% more sightings. A reported Bigfoot stands 1.8 to 2.7 metres. A black bear on its hind legs stands 1.2 to 2 metres, at night, in trees, seen by someone who is not a zoologist.
